Hakonechloa / Japanese Forest Grass

Hakonechloa macra
'Aurea'

Lovely fountainy foliage. I put three bright gold 'Aurea' Hakone grasses along the walk to the back yard, and they spill over the bluestones beautifully.

Hakonechloa is a "warm season grass", so it leaves a little bit of a hole in spring at first, until filling in later in the summer.

It is a shade lover, but they seem to get enough shade from nearby plants, even though this walkway is on the west side of the house.

In fall they are tawny brown, a nice neutral with all the reds of fall around them.

By winter I cut them back. They are too messy under snow along the walkway, so They get cut down.
